Toyota has announced the addition of the Altitude Special Edition to the Prado range.

The Prado Altitude is based on the GXL turbo-diesel with automatic transmission. Toyota claim this new Prado variant delivers at least $10,000 of extra features for just $5,000.

The Prado Altitude’s exterior is differentiated from the existing range by new 18-inch alloy wheels, a tilt-and-slide moonroof, auto-levelling LED headlamps and chrome side mouldings.

Prado insiders will also note the Altitude carries the spare tyre underneath the vehicle rather than on the tailgate. This does remove the second fuel tank, leaving owners with a single tank that can hold up to 87 litres of diesel.

Prado Altitude buyers have the choice of four colours – black and the $550 option of silver peal, crystal pearl and graphite.

For the interior, the Prado Altitude seeks to bring higher levels of passenger comfort, front-seat occupants get power-operated seats - eight-way for the driver and four-way for the passenger. Seats are trimmed in black leather-accented upholstery.

There is also a premium JBL 14-speaker audio system that also offers digital (DAB+) radio.

For those keen on a quiet family drive, back seat passengers will enjoy a Blu-ray entertainment system that features a ceiling-mounted 9-inch monitor and 5.1-channel surround sound. Three sets of wireless headphones and a remote control are included.

The Prado Altitude retains all the standard kit found on the GXL including reversing camera, satellite navigation, three-zone climate-controlled air-conditioning, rear parking sensors, audio controls on the steering wheel and keyless smart entry and ignition.

It’s also powered by the well proven 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine.

The Prado Altitude Special Edition is available from $68,230 plus on-roads.
