Holden’s newest member, the 2018 Holden Astra Sportwagon, has officially arrived in Australia.
 
The Astra Sportwagon is the thirteenth new car launched following Holden’s promise in 2015 to launch 24 new models by 2020, let’s hope it’s not an unlucky number for them.
 
Joining the Astra Hatch and Astra Sedan, the new Astra Sportwagon completes the range. Its design and engineering are not dissimilar to its hatch sibling, with the Sportwagon utilising the same tuning setup as the hatch.
 
Holden’s Executive Director – Sales, Michael Filazzola, said: “Astra Sportwagon gives our customers a real alternative to small SUVs. It’s got the space and practicality you’d expect of an SUV but with the style and performance of the award-winning Astra Hatch. Astra Sportwagon is also packed to the brim with technology, like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic park and a kick-gesture power tailgate which is great when your hands are full with the week’s grocery shop!”
 
The Astra Sportwagon will use the same 1.4-litre turbo engine and six-speed automatic transmission from the hatch which produces 110kW/240Nm. Fuel economy is reported at a very economical 5.9L/100km though it will be interesting to see how this translates to real-world driving, even with the stop/start technology.
 
Thanks to the wagon body style, the Astra Sportwagon does offer 1,630-litres of luggage capacity with the rear seats folded. This is the biggest drawcard in favour of opting for the wagon.
 
Safety and technology have not been forgotten with features such as Auto Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist and Forward Collision Alert in addition to a rear view camera available across the range as standard. These inclusions earned the Astra Sportwagon a maximum 5-star ANCAP safety rating.
 
The Astra Sportwagon will be available at Holden dealerships around the country from October this year.
