Mazda Australia has dropped a teaser image of the upcoming 2018 BT-50 ute, the brand claims the styling changes will be exclusive to the Australian market.

The new look Mazda BT-50 is scheduled to go on sale in May this year. This will be the second update since the current generation’s 2011 launch.

Mazda is promising a redesigned front end which has shaved the curved lines in an attempt to enhance the road stance.

Also on the list of updates is a lowered visual centre of gravity which aimed to be achieved through squared off outer bumper edges, the addition of bolder contrasting fog light surrounds as well as a large trapezoidal lower air intake with a skid plate.

A tougher appearance was also the goal when adding strong horizontal lines to the grille which is designed to straighten out the front of the car for a wider and more solid facade.

Vinesh Bhindi, Mazda Australia's Managing Director, said of the update: "The utility segment is a huge priority in Australia and for Mazda; we're always looking to improve and enhance our product offering, to remain competitive and appealing to our customers."

"This upgrade gives the BT-50 a stronger and tougher bearing, which we know Australians look for in a ute."

The BT-50 has become something of a forgotten option in the very competitive ute market. A fresh look will help, the current styling has always been divisive. The elephant in the room is the price, sharper pricing is essential if Mazda wants to build market share. The Mitsubishi Triton is now the dominant player when it comes to value in the ute market and clawing that back is a big ask.

Full specifications and pricing for the updated BT-50 are expected closer to the May release date. Watch this space!
