In what could possibly be a glimpse into the future for Aussie off-road fans, the new 2018 Nissan Terra SUV has been launched in the Philippines.

Following the April launch in China, also on the agenda are launches in Thailand and Indonesia before the end of June with Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam to follow.

Built on the Navara platform, if Nissan makes the case to bring the Terra to Australia, it would be competing against the underrated Toyota Fortuna, the overpriced Ford Everest and the Isuzu MU-X, the current segment king.

Dimensionally, the Terra comes in at 4885mm long, 1865mm wide and 1835mm high with 225mm of ground clearance.

Vincent Wijnen, Nissan’s head of marketing and sales for the Asia and Oceania region, said of the Terra: “The ingenious combination of high performance, best-in-class cabin space and Nissan Intelligent Mobility features gives family and friends the confidence to go anywhere.”

The Terra is built on a ladder-frame chassis like all of its direct rivals. It will also feature a five-link coil spring rear suspension and a 4WD diff-lock system.

For the Filipino market, the Terra will be powered by a 2.5-litre turbo-diesel engine producing 140kW and 450Nm.

Nissan has also included a host of advanced technologies as part of the Nissan Intelligent Mobility set up. Lane departure warning, blind spot warning as well as intelligent around view monitor with moving object detection are all part of the package.

For the first time in a Nissan SUV, the Smart Rear View Mirror is also included allowing drivers an unobstructed view from the back-mounted camera.

Although there has been no official statement from Nissan’s local arm, we suspect the Terra has a better than average chance of finding its way Down Under.
