The 2018 Range Rover Velar, the newest member of the Range Rover family arrived in Australia this week.

Built on the same platform as the Jaguar F-PACE SUV, the Velar will fill a gap in the Range Rover line-up between the Evoque and Sport.

In terms of proportions, the designers have done well to maintain the familiar Range Rover design language in a mid-size package.

Unbelievably, at launch, there are 50 variants to choose from with prices ranging from $70,662 to $168,862.

Both the Velar and Velar R-Dynamic core range comprises Standard, S, SE or HSE trim levels. There’s also a First Edition model, available with either a V6 diesel or supercharged petrol engine. The First Edition is available for one model year only and brings a higher level of luxury that the HSE.

With such a wide range and an extensive list of packs and options, you’re unlikely to see two identical Velars.

Technology lovers can get excited, the Velar will debut the Touch Pro Duo infotainment system, featuring two high-definition 10-inch touchscreens.

We are very excited to experience the premium textile seat material that has been developed with Kvadrat, a leading manufacturer of high-quality design textiles from Europe. There is now demand for a sustainable, yet premium alternative to leather.

The Range Rover Velar isn’t just a driveway queen destined to live a sedate life of school runs and shopping trips, the brand says like all Range Rover models, the Velar offers ‘world-class all-terrain capability’.

The Velar will utilise a sophisticated all-wheel drive system, four-corner air suspension, ground clearance of 251mm (213mm with coil springs), wading depth of 650mm (600mm with coil springs) and Land Rover's much-revered Terrain Response 2 and All Terrain Progress Control. The off-road credentials look impressive for a car in this segment.

There are six engines to choose from, three diesel and three petrol in both four and six-cylinder configurations.

The four-cylinder Ingenium diesel engines are offered in 132kW/500Nm and 177kW/500Nm variants. The V6 oiler outputs 221kW of power and a huge 700Nm of torque, we have already experienced this engine in the Jaguar F-PACE.

Moving to the four-cylinder Ingenium petrol engines, the base unit produces 184kW/365Nm. The P300 engine outputs 221kW and 400Nm making it the most powerful four-cylinder engine ever deployed under the hood of a Land Rover.

The 280kW supercharged V6 petrol engine develops 280kW/450Nm, Land Rover claims a 0 to 100km/h sprint time of 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 250km/h.

All Velars will come standard with the brilliant ZF eight-speed automatic transmission which will send power to all four wheels.

The Range Rover Velar is on sale now.
