The all-new Toyota Corolla has been revealed with the twelfth-generation of the popular small car scheduled to arrive in Australia in August.

The new Corolla will be built on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform which features a lower centre of gravity, multi-link rear suspension and more rigid body shell. Toyota says the new platform will deliver better handling and stability without compromising ride and comfort.

On the outside, the new Corolla is lower, longer and wider than the outgoing car. The new styling adheres to Toyota’s ‘Under Priority’ and ‘Keen Look’ design philosophies – whatever that means.

Overall, the new Corolla hatch is 40mm longer, pleasingly, every millimetre of extra length has been absorbed within the longer wheelbase, meaning more rear seat space.

Width has increased by 30mm, while the roof's peak has been lowered 25mm. The front overhang has been reduced by 20mm which has been directly transferred to the rear. Toyota says the change in proportions provides a more muscular appearance.

Safety equipment is yet to be confirmed, however, Toyota’s suite of safety technologies including autonomous emergency braking is likely to be available across the range.

Moving to powertrains, there will be a new 2.0-litre petrol engine that offers more power and torque than what is currently available in the Corolla.

The latest version of Toyota's 1.8-litre hybrid powertrain will also be available in the new Corolla. According to Toyota, the hybrid option will deliver Prius rivalling efficiency.

Toyota Australia's vice-president sales and marketing Sean Hanley said the TNGA-based design and fun-to-drive characteristics would transform the entire Corolla hatch ownership experience.

"New Corolla hatch is a more premium and stylish car that guarantees a more rewarding driving experience and places a priority on the highest active and passive safety standards," Mr Hanley said.

"These generational improvements have been made possible through TNGA, which is integral to the company's mission to build ever-better cars that will excite a new generation of buyers," he added.

"At the same time, Corolla retains the proven, dependable and safe reputation that has made it Australia's top-selling passenger car for the past five years in a row."

In Australia, cumulative Corolla sales have topped 1.4 million since the first cars were sold in 1967.
