Details have been announced for the 2018 Toyota Fortuner range. Toyota has sharpened its pencil and slashed prices by a minimum of $5,000 on all Fortuner variants whilst also boosting standard equipment.

Now starting at $42,590 plus on-road costs all grades, apart from the top-of-the-line Crusade, are priced below the $50,000 mark.

The base model GX variant gains rear parking sensors and 17-inch alloy wheels to replace the steelies.

Moving up to the GXL now sees the inclusion of satellite navigation, Toyota Link system and digital radio all displayed on the seven-inch display screen.

The GXL automatic also has the added option of dark brown leather-accented interior trim with power-operated front seats.

The top-spec Crusade model, now priced at $56,990 (before on-roads) gains a premium 11-speaker JBL audio system, eight-way power-adjustable heated front seats as well as LED fog lamps replacing the halogen ones.

The 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine producing down 130kW/450Nm (420Nm for the manual) is unchanged and comes with the option of a six-speed manual or automatic transmission to complete the drivetrain. Although, the Crusade is now only available with an automatic.

The Fortuner’s towing capacity remains unchanged, the manual is rated to tow 3000kg, while the automatic can pull 2800kg.

Tony Cramb, Toyota Australia's executive director sales and marketing, said: "The added features further boost the appeal of Fortuner, which is recognised for offering the space, comfort, convenience and quality of an SUV while delighting owners with its prodigious off-road ability."

It’s been a relatively quiet year for the Fortuner, it has only managed 1960 YTD sales. This price drop and equipment increase will give the Toyota some much-needed firepower.

The ‘ute with a boot’ segment is currently owned by Isuzu’s MU-X (5829 sales YTD). The MU-X has so far had the Fortuner easily covered with its new 3.0-litre engine, longer service intervals and five-year warranty.
