The 2019 BMW M340i xDrive sedan has been revealed ahead of its first public outing at the Los Angeles motor show later this month.

This one is all about the engine, power comes from a newly developed turbocharged straight six-cylinder petrol unit developing 275kW of power and 500Nm of torque.

Power is sent to a rear-biased all-wheel drive system through an eight-speed automatic transmission. It features short ratios for the lower gears for improved acceleration which is also supported by a launch control option.

BMW claims the M340i xDrive can complete the 0-100km/h sprint in 4.4 seconds.

Fuel consumption on a combined run is rated at 7.5L/100km, though this may skyrocket if the driver has a heavy right foot.

M Sport suspension which not only lowers the vehicle by 10mm but also incorporates M specific elastokinematics and a new lift-related damper control function is standard, as is an M Sport differential and M brake package.

Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers will be available as an option.

18-inch M light alloy wheels wearing mixed 225/45 tyres on the front wheels and 255/40 tyres on the rear come standard. New 19-inch wheel designs will be found on the options list.

Also differentiating the M340i from other new 3 Series models is a kidney grille boasting a mesh design, a rear spoiler finished in the body colour and trapezoidal exhaust tailpipe trims.

The exterior mirror caps, air intake struts, the front surfaces of the kidney grille, tailpipe trims and the model lettering on the back are all finished in Cerium Grey metallic.

Along with the wider 3 Series range, the M340i will get BMW’s new multimedia system that uses a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch central infotainment screen. The system will feature the brand’s new Intelligent Personal Assistant.

Other interior highlights include sports seats trimmed in faux leather and Alcantara, anthracite roof liner, M leather steering wheel with shift paddles, interior finishes in Aluminium Tetragon and model-specific front door sill covers.

There is no confirmation yet from BMW Australia on whether the M340i xDrive will be offered locally, though we suspect it will. Deliveries will commence in Europe and the US in July 2019.
