BMW Australia has announced a power boost for the 2020 Z4 M40i roadster ahead of a local arrival early next year.

The range-topping Z4 M40i will get a 35kW increase to the power output of its 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder petrol engine, taking the total outputs to 285kW and 500Nm.

Increasing the power means the Z4 M40i can now accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 4.1 seconds, an improvement of four-tenths of a second over the current model.

Interestingly, the power upgrade comes at no cost with BMW keeping the car priced from $124,900 plus on-road costs.

As standard the Z4 M40i gets an M Sport differential, unique 19-inch alloy wheels finished in Cerium Grey, lumbar support for the front seats, ambient lighting and a 12-speaker harman/kardon sound system.

The remainder of the Z4 range is carried over starting with the sDrive20i (from $84,900 plus on-roads) which features 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in high-performance tyres, LED headlights, a wind deflector, and automatic anti-dazzle interior and wing mirrors.

On the inside, the entry car features electrically-adjustable M Sports Seats with memory function and heating, Vernasca leather trim, dual-zone climate control, a head-up display, DAB digital radio, a 10-speaker audio system, Apple CarPlay and wireless phone charging.

The sDrive20i is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine developing 145kW and 320Nm. Power goes to the rear wheels in all variants through an eight-speed automatic transmission. BMW is quoting a 0-100km/h sprint time of 6.6 seconds and fuel economy of 6.5L/100km on the combined cycle.

Stepping up to the Z4 sDrive30i ($104,900 plus on-roads) adds 19-inch alloy wheels, adaptive LED headlights, active cruise control with stop & go, comfort access, M Sport brakes and adaptive M suspension. An electronically-operated limited-slip M Sport differential is optional.

The sDrive30i uses the same engine as the entry-model, however, it’s tuned to produce 190kW and 400Nm. The 0-100km/h dash can be achieved in 5.4 seconds with an identical consumption figure of 6.5L/100km on a combined run.

Updated versions of the Z4 M40i are due to arrive in dealerships in the first quarter of 2020.
