After a long wait, Australian specs and pricing have been announced for the 2020 Jeep Gladiator ute ahead of a local arrival in May.

At launch, Jeep will offer the Gladiator in Overland and Rubicon trim levels, along with a limited-run Launch Edition variant.

While local dual-cab buyers overwhelmingly prefer diesel, initially, all Gladiator models will be powered by the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 petrol engine producing 209kW and 347Nm. Drive is sent to all four corners through an eight-speed automatic transmission from specialists ZF.

Pricing is at the top end of the segment with the Overland starting from $75,450 plus on-road costs, while the Rubicon opens at $76,450 plus on-roads.

When compared to the four-door Wrangler, the Gladiator’s frame is an additional 787mm in length with an extra 492mm on the wheelbase.

The Gladiator uses a body-on-frame design, a five-link suspension system, and four steel cross-members to reinforce the load floor while the aluminium tailgate is damped.

Built for the tuff stuff, the Overland is equipped with the Selec-Trac Active On-Demand 4x4 system with a two-speed part-time transfer case with a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio, and heavy-duty third-generation Dana 44 axles with a 3.73 rear axle ratio.

Rubicon variants get the Rock-Trac Active On-Demand 4x4 system, with heavy-duty third-generation Dana 44 front and rear axles with a “4LO” ratio of 4:1. A 4.10 rear axle ratio is standard as are Tru-Lok locking differentials.

To further enhance the Rubicon’s off-road capabilities it also features Jeep’s electronic sway-bar disconnect system, a crawl ratio of 77.2:1, an Off-Road+ drive mode, and 2.0-inch Fox aluminium shocks.

With an approach angle of 40.7 degrees, break-over angle of 18.4 degrees, departure angle of 25.1 degrees and a ground clearance of 283mm the Gladiator looks the goods on paper.

For those with something to tow, with this powertrain, the Gladiator has a maximum braked towing capacity of 2721kg, well short of the industry-standard 3500kg.

In terms of safety, standard equipment includes autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection, a rear-view camera and adaptive cruise control.

Based on the range-topping Rubicon, the Launch Edition is limited to 100 units nationally priced from $86,450 plus on-road costs.

The Launch Edition features special tailgate badging, 17-inch gloss black wheels, a steel front bumper, body-coloured fender flares, a three-piece body-coloured hard top, a leather-wrapped instrument panel and the lifestyle adventure package as standard. There’s also a selection of exclusive colour options.
