In recent years a data has emerged showing the number of fatalities on our roads increasing despite numerous road safety campaigns. Local crash tester ANCAP has found that age and relative vehicle safety to be a likely contributing factor.

To combat the ominous road fatality statistics, ANCAP is launching a new awareness campaign aimed at promoting community conversation and consideration of safer vehicle choices.

The new ‘Safer Vehicle Choices Save Lives’ campaign aims to highlight the different crash outcomes between older vehicles compared to modern vehicles. This is shown through a comparison of a young female driver and a middle-aged male driver and their fate which is determined by the vehicle they drive.

ANCAP Chief Executive, Mr James Goodwin, commented “Many road safety campaigns have tended to focus on behavioural aspects such as speed, fatigue, drink driving and enforcement. They remain vital, however, this campaign highlights the importance of choosing a safer vehicle.”

“A mistake on the road – whether it be yours or someone else’s – can be fatal, so the campaign asks the community to consider how safe the vehicle is that they, or their family, are driving.”

As part of the campaign, viewers are encouraged to ‘Find out who survives’ which opens up the opportunity to explore further the safety of their own vehicle.

The average age of a vehicle involved in a fatal crash in Australia has been increasing from 9.8 years in 2014 to 13.1 years in 2017.

The campaign begins around Australia from July 2, 2018.
