ANCAP has released scores for the latest round of crash testing with the Alfa Romeo Stelvio and Giulia scoring the maximum five-star safety rating whilst the Citroen C3 stumbled during testing to achieve a disappointing four-star result.

In the Adult Occupant Protection test the results were outstanding for both Alfa Romeos scoring 98 per cent and 97 per cent for the Giulia and Stelvio respectively. These scores match the best scores achieved for each segment previously set by the Volvo XC60 and XC90.

ANCAP Chief Executive, James Goodwin, said of the Alfa Romeo tests, “These are impressive scores which reflect the effort the brand has put into designing vehicles to keep occupants safe.”

“With Adult Occupant Protection we look at how a vehicle performs structurally across a range of destructive crash tests, but also how well the restraint systems work to minimise injury. Low-speed autonomous emergency braking also forms part of this, with both Alfa Romeo models performing well.”

The five-star ANCAP safety rating applies to all 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel Stelvio and Giulia variants.

The Citroen C3 fell short of today’s safety expectations due to its inability to actively detect and prevent pedestrian contact combined with head injury risk.

Of the Citroen C3, Mr Goodwin commented, “Unfortunately the C3 falls down in the Pedestrian Protection aspects of our assessment.”

“We may not all be drivers, but we are all pedestrians so it is important the design and specification of a vehicle considers the safety of those inside as well as outside the vehicle,” he added.

The four-star ANCAP safety rating applies to the Citroen C3 1.2-litre Shine, Feel and Feel Plus variants built from 2017.
