BMW have released images and specifications for European versions of its new 5 Series Touring range.

The specification sheet looks impressive and engine options consist of petrol and diesel units with four and six cylinders.

In Europe, BMW offer the 540i six-cylinder petrol and 530d six-cylinder diesel with its xDrive all-wheel drive system.

The new range is larger than the previous generation and the wheelbase has grown slightly and now measures a substantial 2,975mm.

Remarkably, the larger dimensions have not added any bulk, in fact, the new Touring models have shed up to 100kg thanks to BMW’s EfficientLightweight and new chassis technology.

Interestingly, the Ultimate Driving Machine has highlighted the inclusion of a larger selection of driver assistance systems that “reduce the gap to automated driving.” Eventually, a new slogan is going to be needed.

The new Touring models also include an updated infotainment system incorporating the latest-generation BMW iDrive, including Touch Controller. An optional 10.25-inch touchscreen is also available.

BMW gesture control and natural voice commands compliment the system, as does wireless smartphone integration via Bluetooth and inductive charging. Apple CarPlay is also available across the range.

A highlight is the new Head-Up display that has a 70 percent larger projection surface.

At this stage, BMW has not confirmed the new 5 Series Touring for Australia. New models are expected in European showrooms in June.

Despite making plenty of sense for family buyers, Australians have shown very little love for touring or sports wagon variants in recent times. This insatiable appetite to sit high in an SUV, especially in the prestige segment, has seen rivals Mercedes and Audi stop selling some of their range here.
