With a strong push towards electrification from 2021 onwards, Infiniti has revealed the Project Black S prototype ahead of its public debut at the Paris motor show.

Based on the Q60 Red S sports coupe, the prototype has been developed in collaboration with the Renault Sport Formula One Team to further progress dual-hybrid electric powertrain technology for road use.

Driving the Project Black S is a combination of the high-performance dual-hybrid technology with the VR30 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo engine. The dual-hybrid powertrain prototype is capable of generating 420kW of power and uses a unique energy recovery system (ERS) to contribute greater power and torque than the donor engine. For comparison, the conventional VR30 engine produces 298kW.

Three motor generator units (MGU) are used with a single MGU-K (K for kinetic) unit redrawing the kinetic energy from braking. The twin electric turbochargers are fitted with MGU-H (H for heat) units which redraw heat energy from exhaust gases. Together they enable the powertrain to generate electrical power from braking as well as accelerating.

Infiniti claims the car can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in under four seconds.

Roland Krueger, Chairman and Global President at Infiniti, commented: “The Project Black S represents the very top end of electrification in the Alliance portfolio, and is another example of Infiniti’s entrepreneurial spirit on its journey to electrification from 2021 onward.”

The full reveal of the Infiniti Project Black S prototype will take place on October 1, 2018, in Paris.
