As the end of the financial year ticks over Kia has announced it has achieved 500,000 cumulative new car sales in Australia.

The announcement comes on the eve of the 30th year since the first Kia was first sold in Australia.

Kia Motors Australia Chief Operating Officer Damien Meredith commented, “Like anything new, it took a while to gain traction in Australia but the acceptance of the brand – and the accompanying acceleration of sales – over the past decade has been quite amazing.”

Way back in 1988, Kia sold 60 new cars in Australia with the number rising to 12,524 by 1998. Figures from 2008 record 180,829 new car sales in Australia for the Korean brand.

Massive investment in research and development, as well as new styling directed by Peter Schreyer, has seen the brand explode in Australia. By the end of 2011, almost a quarter of a million new Kia models were driving on local roads. The number has doubled in the six and a half years since then and sees no signs of halting just yet.

With a desirable line-up featuring sharp pricing and an industry-leading warranty package, Kia has struck a chord with Australian buyers. The Cerato, Sportage and Sorento continue to perform strongly.

2018 is shaping up as another record year for the brand with 10.4 per cent growth in year-to-date sales.
