Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi and Google will embark on a partnership deal to employ the Android operating system in new vehicles across the automotive alliance starting from 2021.

As part of the technology partnership, the Android system will be fitted in vehicles sold by the Alliance members in many markets around the world. It will provide turn-by-turn navigation with Google Maps, access to a range of automotive apps on the Google Play Store and be able to perform the usual multimedia activities including answering calls and texts, control media and find information.

With the use of Google Assistant occupants will also be able to manage vehicle functions with their voice.

Although the Alliance vehicles will share the Android platform, the individual brands will be able to individualize the customer interface and specific features to suit their brand and differentiate it from the rest of the group.

Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi is hoping the Google partnership will help reach increased sales targets of more than 14 million units a year by the end of 2022, a plan which also involves the launch of 12 new zero-emission electric vehicles, new autonomous-driving technologies and the ongoing rollout of the Alliance Intelligent Cloud.
