Volkswagen Australia has announced the move to a five-year, unlimited kilometre warranty until December 31.

Following the trail blazed by Kia and HyundaiHonda, Holden, Ford and Mazda have all recently made the move to five-year warranty coverage.

The move also brings Volkswagen warranty coverage into line with that of Sister brand Skoda.

This is obviously a data collecting exercise from Volkswagen, similar to the path taken by Holden which eventually lead to the brand making the move permanent.

Volkswagen Group Australia Managing Director Michael Bartsch said customer reaction to the extended warranty coverage will be informative.

If the move does become permanent, it would leave only Toyota, Suzuki, Subaru and Nissan as the only volume brands sticking with the outdated three-year plan.
