Volkswagen Australia has announced it will be partnering with new ridesharing platform UniCar after being appointed the preferred vehicle supplier for the business.

UniCar was founded in Singapore and has a customer and driver first focus. Initially trials of the new ridesharing platform will be run on the Gold Coast whilst the 2018 Commonwealth Games are in full swing. UniCar will be offering Volkswagen vehicles to customers and drivers as part of the agreement.

Volkswagen Managing Director Michael Bartsch said of the new partnership: "Ridesharing is but one facet of the way our industry is changing, as brands transition from being simply manufacturers and sellers of cars, to be able to offer a wide range of personal mobility solutions.”

"Partnering with UniCar is a great first step as we continue to evolve to the industry and business needs of the future," he added.

For the Gold Coast pilot program throughout April, 16 Volkswagen vehicles will be in use. If the program is successful the partnership will offer a wider fleet of vehicles.
