Additional details for the 2019 Toyota Corolla hybrid have been released today, the latest generation of Australia’s best-selling passenger car is due to arrive in August.

The new Corolla hybrid will utilise an improved version of the 1.8-litre Atkinson Cycle powertrain from the Prius. The four-cylinder petrol engine will be paired with a set of motor generators to provide electric-only drive to the front wheels; combined petrol and electric drive; and electricity generation to recharge the battery.

The new 1.8-litre petrol engine generates a maximum 72kW of power at 5200rpm and peak torque of 142Nm at 3600rpm, while the main electric drive motor produces maximum outputs of 53kW and 163Nm. The combined maximum output for the system is 90kW. Fuel use on the combined cycle is rated at 4.2l/100km.

Toyota will also offer an all-new Dynamic-Shift continuously-variable transmission (CVT) with 10 programmed shifts as well as a sport mode and paddle shifters. Interestingly, it will be the first CVT in a passenger car to feature a launch gear which Toyota says will offer “powerful and predictable acceleration.”

Like the new Camry and C-HR, the 2019 Corolla will be built on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform which provides a low centre of gravity, improved front-to-rear weight balance and a 60 per cent improvement to body rigidity.

Australian delivered cars will feature Toyota’s latest pre-collision system with autonomous emergency braking, pedestrian detection, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist and lane-departure alert with steering assist.

The new Corolla will also get LED headlamps, an upgraded multimedia system and an electric park brake.

Depending on the variant other equipment highlights include 18-inch alloy wheels, 8.0-inch satellite navigation screen, dual-zone air-conditioning, 8-speaker JBL sound system, keyless smart entry and start, 7.0-inch colour multi-information display, colour head-up display and wireless phone charging.

Full Australian specifications and pricing will be revealed closer to the Corolla’s August launch.
