BMW has revealed the new M340d xDrive ahead of a public debut at the Geneva motor show.

The M340d xDrive is the first M Performance 3 Series model to be diesel-powered. It will sit alongside the M340i xDrive in the new 3 Series line-up.

Power comes from a turbo-diesel 3.0-litre inline-six engine with 48V mild-hybrid technology. BMW lists the outputs at 250kW and 700Nm.

The 48-volt starter generator of the mild hybrid system can output an additional 8kW when prompt acceleration is required. The system can also recuperate energy when braking and switch off the diesel engine when coasting.

An eight-speed automatic transmission sends power to a rear-biased all-wheel drive system.

Globally, BMW will offer the M340d xDrive in sedan and wagon body styles. BMW claims the sedan can sprint from 0-100km/h in 4.6 seconds, while the wagon takes 4.8 seconds.

Depending on the final spec, on the combined cycle the consumption is rated at 5.3-5.8L/100km.

At this stage, BMW’s Australian arm is yet to announce local availability, specifications and pricing.
