The Mazda CX-8 and Volvo XC40 have both achieved a five-star ANCAP safety rating after being the first models to be tested under the more rigorous 2018 assessment protocols.

The bar to achieve the coveted five-star rating was raised this year. The Volvo recorded scores of 97 per cent for adult occupant protection and 84 per cent for child occupant protection.

“The XC40 performed well across all areas of assessment, offering emergency lane keeping functionality and the full range of autonomous emergency braking systems,” said ANCAP Chief Executive, Mr James Goodwin.

Mazda’s new diesel CX-8 scored 96 per cent in adult occupant protection and 87 per cent in child occupant protection.

“Good levels of performance were achieved by the CX-8 in the area of Child Occupant Protection, with our assessment engineers praising its ability to safely accommodate child restraints in all five rear seating positions,” said Goodwin.

“It’s encouraging to see Mazda and Volvo set the standard, with their CX-8 and XC40 models being the first to step up and achieve five stars against our increased test standards.”

The five-star safety rating applies to all Mazda CX-8 models and all-wheel drive variants of the Volvo XC40. The two-wheel-drive versions of the XC40 are yet to be tested.
