After pulling a series of all-nighters, the heavies at Mercedes-AMG have decided to officially name the brand’s first hypercar the AMG One.

Originally revealed at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show, the car was developed under the moniker, Project One.

Mercedes-AMG claims the name stands for the highest automotive ambition: to bring Formula 1 hybrid technology to the road.

The powertrain brings the 1.6-litre V6 petrol engine with direct injection and electrically assisted single turbocharging that comes directly from the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 racing car. Additional power comes from four electric motors.

In total, Mercedes-AMG claims the hybrid powertrain develops ‘over’ 740kW or 1000 horsepower, ‘more than’ 500kW comes from the petrol engine, while the electric motors produce 120kW.

Remarkably, the One’s plug-in hybrid system has an all-electric range of up to 25 kilometres.

Power is put down via an automated AMG eight-speed manual transmission, variable AMG Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system with hybrid-drive rear axle, electrically driven front axle and torque vectoring.

The eight-speed transmission has been entirely developed from scratch for the One. It is activated hydraulically and has a fully automatic mode, alternatively, shift paddles are available for manual changes.

Only 275 examples of the One will be manufactured, of which only eight have been allocated to Australia and New Zealand.
