The next-generation Toyota GR Super Sport Concept has debuted at the Tokyo Auto Salon.

The potential Mercedes-AMG Project One rival was developed by Toyota GAZOO Racing.

The GR Super Sport Concept incorporates the same hybrid technology as Toyota’s TS050 hybrid race car which competes in the World Endurance Championships (WEC). The GR Super Sport Concept also uses other components from the TS050 for a consistent approach in regards to technology and know-how acquired in motorsport which is then a benefit to new production vehicles.

GAZOO Racing Company president Shigeki Tomoyama said, "Rather than developing production cars into sports cars, we aim to work out how to incorporate the know-how developed through races and rallies into production cars."

Powering the new concept car is a combination of a 2.4-litre twin-turbo V6 engine and a set of electric motors – a powertrain from Toyota Hybrid System-Racing (THS-R) to produce a hypercar rivalling 735kW.

As a point of comparison, the Mercedes-AMG Project One develops 740kW from a 1.6-litre V6 petrol engine with direct injection and electrically assisted single turbocharging that comes directly from the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 racing car. Extra power comes from four electric motors.

"Although it will be some time before you all have the opportunity to get behind the wheel, I hope that the GR Super Sport Concept will give you a taste of what we aim to achieve with our next-generation sports cars," said Mr Tomoyama.
