The updated 2021 Mini Countryman SUV has been revealed ahead of a local launch towards the end of this year.

Externally, the updated Countryman is distinguished by a redesigned grille, a new bumper and a revised lower air intake arrangement at the front, while the rear gets a new bumper design and lower valence.

LED lighting is now standard across the range, the LED daytime light band doubles up as turn indicators, while the rear light graphics trace the outline of a Union Jack motif.

Along with the new White Silver and Sage Green metallic paint choices, buyers can have the roof and wing mirror caps finished in either body colour, white, black or silver depending on the variant.

A new Piano Black exterior option is also available which darkens selected chrome pieces to high-gloss black.

On the inside, there’s a new 5.0-inch digital instrument cluster, the 8.8-inch infotainment touchscreen has been repositioned, and the major controls have been reorganised for a cleaner look.

The engines have been upgraded with revised exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder, ensuring more effective cooling of the exhaust gases and the turbocharging system, as well as increased fuel pressure (in petrol variants) from 200 to 350 bar. There’s no extra power, the changes are about emission reduction.

Locally, the range will open with the Countryman Cooper which is powered by a 100kW/220Nm three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine.

The Cooper S version uses a four-cylinder turbo-petrol unit to produce 131kW and 280Nm.

The PHEV Countryman Cooper SE All4 gets a larger 9.6kWh lithium-ion battery which increases the electric driving range from 40km to around 60 km. The powertrain consists of a three-cylinder petrol engine driving the front wheels with an electric motor driving the rear axle. In total, the system produces 165kW of power and 385Nm of torque.

This is an important model line for Mini, the Countryman now accounts for almost 30 per cent of the brand’s new registrations worldwide.

The updated Countryman will arrive in Australia towards the end of 2020 with full specifications and pricing to be announced closer to the launch date.
