Toyota have announced specifications and pricing for the 2017 Kluger.

There are improvements across the range with the headline acts being updates to the engine and a new transmission.

The 3.5-litre V6 engine - standard across the range - has been tweaked to output 17kW more power (218kW) and 13Nm of additional torque (350Nm).

A new eight-speed automatic transmission replaces the old six-speed and promises to bring greater fuel efficiency to the line-up.

The Kluger has a reputation for being thirsty, however, Toyota claim fuel consumption improvements ranging from 8.8 per cent to more than 10 per cent.

Official combined figures now claim the GX and GXL 2WD will consume 9.1L/100km, while the Grande 2WD claims 9.3L/100km. Interestingly, all AWD variants are rated at 9.5L/100km.

Toyota designers have updated the Kluger’s exterior with refreshed front and rear masks incorporating a new grille and LED taillights.

All 2017 Kluger variants are fitted with air-conditioning, cruise control, electric power steering, six-speaker display audio with Toyota Link, front foglamps, privacy glass and power-adjustable exterior mirrors.

The GLX presents as the best value model,  gaining a significant amount of extra kit including an 8-inch audio screen, satellite navigation, digital radio, and a power back door with the a clever independently operated glass hatch.

The range-topping Grande gains a new panoramic view monitor that uses four cameras (front, rear and in the side mirrors) to display a 360-degree bird's-eye view of the vehicle surroundings when driving at low speeds. The Grande model also gets rear cross-traffic alert.

Extra equipment does come at extra cost, Kluger pricing now starts at $43,550 plus on-road costs, representing increases of ranging from $1860 to $2360.

The updated Kluger range is covered by Toyota Service Advantage capped-price servicing at $180 per service.

2017 Toyota Kluger pricing (excluding on-road costs)

GX $43,550 (+$1,360)
GXL $53,550 (+$2,360)
Grande $65,935 (+$1,860)
