Hyundai has revealed its high-performance Veloster N model at the North American International Auto Show alongside the rest of the 2018 Veloster range, with production set to begin in September.

The Veloster N is bred to make the driver’s heart beat faster with a focus on handling, drivability and race track capability.

President and head of Performance Development and High-Performance Vehicle Division, Hyundai Motor Group Albert Biermann, said of the Veloster N, “The Veloster N is another example of Hyundai Motor's capabilities, creating an exciting sports car with thrilling dynamics combined with a compelling affordability equation as key to the N high-performance concept.”

Setting the Veloster N apart from the rest of the 2018 Veloster range is a unique exterior, interior and mechanics.

On the outside, the Veloster N boasts an exclusive N-design front fascia and grille with practical front air ducts which are used for enhanced brake cooling, N-design rocker side sills, N-design rear spoiler, rear fascia with integrated diffuser, high flow dual exhaust and 19-inch alloy wheels with machined-finish dual-spoke star design are available.

Wrapped around the rims are ultra-high performance 225/40R18 Michelin Pilot SuperSport for the 18-inch wheel design and exclusive-compound 235/35R19 Pirelli P-Zero for the 19-inch alloy wheels.

Internally the Veloster N gets N-design cloth sport seats featuring performance-focused bolstering, N-design steering wheel and shift knob, N-logo door sill plates and N-design instruments cluster all accented by the N performance blue accent theme.

Differentiating the Veloster N under the hood is the 2.0-litre direct-injected turbocharged engine estimated to deliver 202kW at 6,000 rpm and 353Nm from 1,450-4,700 rpm. The engine is matched with a close-ratio, short-throw six-speed manual transmission with downshift rev-matching capability that sends power to the front wheels.

The powertrain also uses a multi-mode, high-flow active sport exhaust system with a variable exhaust actuator which, when in N mode, yields an engine over-run exhaust crackle during spirited-driving upshifts and rev-matched downshifts.

For enhanced cornering capability an electronic torque-vectoring N Corner-Carving Limited-slip Differential is used which improves launch performance, reduces acceleration slip understeer and increases maximum cornering speed via precise torque-vectoring.

A selection of driver tuning preferences is also available with the N Grin Control System drive mode selection system. Available modes include Normal, Sport, N, Eco and N Custom.

Braking is an important aspect of a performance vehicle so the Veloster N sports oversized 13.6-inch performance rotors on the front axle and 12.4-inch rotors on the rear.

Australian performance fans should remain calm, at this stage the Veloster N isn’t a certain starter for Australia. We will keep you posted.
