Updates have been announced for the 2018 Toyota RAV4 range, which now sees autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and satellite navigation standard on all model variants.

Surprisingly, for the 2018 model year, the biggest changes are in the base GX model. Safety credentials have been strengthened to include autonomous emergency braking, lane-departure alert, active cruise control and automatic high beam.

The entry-level GX also gains satellite navigation, Toyota Link, digital radio, dusk-sensing headlights, fog lamps and a 4.2-inch multi-information display that is housed in the instrument cluster.

The mid-range GXL has also received a safety boost with the addition of blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert as standard equipment.

Buyers can now option a Premium interior pack for the 2WD GXL that incorporates a 10-way power-operated driver's seat with two-position memory, leather accented trim with heating for the two front seats, for an extra $2,500.

Engines are carried over, starting with a 107kW 2.0-litre petrol for 2WD models. AWD models are offered with either a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine that develops 110kW/340Nm, or a 2.5-litre petrol engine that produces 132kW/233Nm.

Purists can get the 2WD 2.0-litre GX with a six-speed manual gearbox, or for those wanting an automatic, there is the option of a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

AWD diesel RAV4s are available with either a manual or automatic transmissions in the GX grade, leaving the GXL and Cruiser models as automatic-only.

All petrol AWD variants get a six-speed automatic transmission.

The new equipment comes cheap on the petrol powered models with price rises of between $40 and $900 easily offset by the extra gear. The unchanged Cruiser model gets a $910 price drop.

Prices have climbed on all diesel models except the Cruiser which hasn’t changed. GX and GXL diesel variants have risen $1575 to $2350.
