Volkswagon’s Golf 7.5 performance range has hit a new level of affordability with the arrival of the 2018 Golf GTI Original starting at $37,490 plus on-road costs.

The GTI Original is a ‘pure’ three-door GTI for enthusiasts. It still features the same 169kW/350Nm 2.0-litre turbo four and choice of six-speed manual or six-speed DSG transmissions as its five-door GTI counterparts.

Getting into a Golf R is now cheaper than ever with the 2018 Golf R Grid Edition priced at $47,490 plus on-roads, this makes the Grid Edition the first R variant to be priced less than $50,000.

Despite the lower price point, the Grid Edition is packed with features such as Alcantara upholstery and an 8.0-inch infotainment screen. It also features a 213kW/380Nm 2.0-litre turbo four engine mated with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed wet clutch DSG transmission and fifth generation 4MOTION all-wheel drive.

Volkswagen Group Australia Managing Director Michael Bartsch said, "Extraordinary claims are being made for supposed rivals that are not yet on sale. While any skunkworks can turn out a track day special, the expertise and experience required to engineer a GTI or an R – cars that also excel in the real world - is rather more hard-won.

"When you've owned a GTI or an R, it's difficult to settle for anything less."
