Audi has released details of the new A1 Sportback, the second-generation model is due to arrive locally early next year with a larger body, improved infotainment and additional safety tech.

The 2019 A1 Sportback has grown to 4030mm in length (+56mm), while the luggage capacity has been increased by 65 litres to 335 litres or 1090 litres with the rear seats folded down.

Three equipment lines – basic, advanced and S line – will be offered with an Edition model also being available from launch.

External design features include a low-placed Singleframe grille with implied side air inlets and three flat slits below the edge of the bonnet which are a throwback to Audi’s rally icon from 1984, the Sport Quattro.

With S line equipment comes larger air inlets, additional sill trims, an elongated slit centrally below the bonnet with two fins, a larger rear wing and twin tailpipes.

The Edition model, which is based on the S line, adds 18-inch wheels in bronze, white or black, optional Audi rings on the side of the car in the rim colour, LED headlights and rear lights with a dark tint.

Internally features include a 10.25-inch Virtual Cockpit in the instrument cluster, multifunction steering wheel, Apply CarPlay and Andriod Auto, two USB and an 11 speaker Bang & Olufsen premium sound system.

In terms of safety, the new A1 gets lane departure warning, speed limiter, Audi pre sense front (autonomous emergency braking), adaptive speed assist, reversing camera and park assist.

Engines will be carried over from the current version and include TFSI engines with outputs between 70kW and 147kW which will be mated with a manual or seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. A six-speed S tronic transmission is also reserved for the top-of-the-range engine.

Four driving modes – auto, dynamic, efficiency and individual – are also available via the optional Audi drive select dynamic handling system.

The 2019 Audi A1 Sportback is set to make its Australian debut in the first half of 2019.
