The 2019 BMW X5 xDrive45e iPerformance has been revealed this week, the plug-in hybrid SUV gets a revised powertrain capable of more pure electric kilometres.

The aforementioned powertrain consists of a turbocharged 3.0-litre 210kW inline-six petrol engine and an 82kW motor, combined the system produces 290kW of power and 600Nm of torque.

With a fully charged battery pack, the electrically powered range is now approximately 80 kilometres, almost three times that of its predecessor.

European (WLTP) testing lists fuel consumption on a combined cycle at 2.1L/100km. Sounds too good to be true.

It’s not just the EV range that has improved, performance has also been sharpened. The X5 xDrive45e can sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds – more than one second less than the outgoing model, while the top speed when driving on electric power is lifted from 120 to 140km/h.

An eight-speed automatic sends power to BMW’s intelligent all-wheel drive system which is clever enough to distribute torque to all wheels when the car is in EV mode.

BMW claims the centre of gravity is lower than its conventionally powered SUVs due to the positioning of the battery pack.

On paper, the only compromise is the loss of 150-litres from the luggage compartment. With all the seats up, the storage volume is 500 litres. Folding the second-row seats raises the volume to 1716 litres.

BMW’s Australian arm is yet to confirm the X5 xDrive45e is coming to Oz, however, it’s hard to see us missing out.
