The hardcore 2019 Land Rover Discovery SVX has been revealed at the Frankfurt motor show.

The production model hailed as ‘the ultimate Discovery for off-road enthusiasts seeking epic adventures’ will hit Australia in 2018.

This new Discovery variant has been developed by Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) division. The Discovery SVX will join other SVO models, the Range Rover Sport SVR and Range Rover SVAutobiography.

Sitting under the bonnet is a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 petrol engine producing 386kW/625Nm. To date, this is the only V8 powered variant of the new Discovery range.

Power will be sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission with twin-speed transfer box. Interestingly, the rotary gear selector is gone, in its place will be a pistol shifter. JLR claims the pistol option provides optimum control of gear selection in off-road manoeuvres.

There’s also a specially tuned Terrain Response 2 system with active centre and electronic rear locking differentials to optimise traction on all surfaces.

The Discovery SVX offers improved approach, departure and breakover angles when compared to the standard car. This is due to a higher ride height and a four-corner air suspension system with long-travel dampers and revised knuckles.

The 20-inch wheels will be wrapped in 275/55 R20 rubber with higher sidewalls to reduce contact pressure and improve performance on soft surfaces.

Other exterior differentiators include an exclusive satin Tectonic Grey paint finish, unique front and rear bumpers with protective skid plates, exposed Rush Orange-finished metal recovery eyes – each rated to enable recovery of more than six tonnes. There’s also a very cool anti-glare bonnet and an integrated rear-mounted electric winch system.

On the inside, the Discovery SVX will feature a unique colour and material combination of Lunar and Light Oyster with Rush Orange accents inside, and 'X' logo perforations on the SVX-branded seats.

Mark Stanton, SVO Director, said: "The SVX product line gives us a fantastic opportunity to deliver the ultimate Land Rover all-terrain capability in a dynamic and distinctive manner, creating a rugged and versatile SUV that the whole family will love: effortless, unstoppable and connected, whatever the terrain.

"Discovery SVX is designed to reward off-road driving enthusiasts with the next level of all-terrain capability, without compromising comfort and practicality."

The Discovery SVX will be the first Land Rover hand-assembled at the SVO Technical Centre in the UK.

The Land Rover Discovery SVX is already confirmed for Australia, pricing will be announced late 2017, with local deliveries to commence in Q3, 2018.
