The 2019 Lexus ES has been revealed, the new generation of the luxury mid-size sedan will arrive in Australia in the fourth quarter of this year as an exclusively hybrid range.

Built on the all-new Global Architecture - K (GA-K) platform, a spin-off from the TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture), the proportions have grown. The new ES is 65mm longer, 45mm wider while riding 5mm lower. Interestingly, the wheelbase has also grown by 50mm.

Other markets will still enjoy V6 power while Australia will make do with a single drivetrain. Locally the ES300h will be powered by an Atkinson cycle 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and electric motor that delivers a combined 153kW. The hybrid system promises to achieve fuel efficiency of 6.0 litres/100km on a combined cycle.

Lexus says the use of a more sophisticated hybrid system control computer better mimics the feel and power delivery of a standard petrol engine.

The nickel-hydrogen battery pack is now smaller which allows it to be mounted underneath the rear seat so it doesn't infringe on boot space.

It’s a sharper looking exterior, the front has a more aggressive stance, there’s also a sloping roofline, LED tail lamps that wrap around the quarter panels and a choice of 17- and 18-inch alloy wheels.

The interior looks typical of Lexus, however, to improve the driving experience the steering wheel angle and position along with the brake pedal angle and location have been changed to deliver a more natural driving position.

The new Lexus Safety System + 2.0 will be a standard inclusion which features autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, a cyclist detection system and improved pedestrian detection at night.

Lexus will offer the new ES300h in both Luxury and Sports Luxury grades. Further detail on grades and pricing will be announced closer to the car’s local launch in the fourth quarter of 2018.
