BMW has announced local specs and pricing for the new 8 Series Gran Coupe ahead of its Australian debut later this year.

Like the Coupe and Convertible versions of the 8 Series, BMW will offer the four-door Gran Coupe in 840i and M850i xDrive guise.

Priced from $199,900 plus on-road costs, the 840i Gran Coupe gets power from a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six developing 250kW and 500Nm. An eight-speed automatic transmission sends power to the rear wheels. BMW claims the 840i can sprint from 0-100km/h in 5.2 seconds.

Standard equipment on the 840i version includes the M Sport package, 20-inch bi-colour M light alloy wheels, adaptive M Suspension, 374mm M Sport brakes, an M Sport differential, active steering, soft-close doors, BMW’s new display key, Driving Assistant Professional, Parking Assistant Plus, laser headlights, a panoramic glass sunroof, an automatic tailgate and keyless entry and push-button start.

On the inside, buyers get BMW Live Cockpit Professional with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 10.25-inch infotainment screen running the new Operating System 7.0. There’s also heated and ventilated front seats, an M leather steering wheel, extended Merino leather upholstery, wireless smartphone charging, gesture control, roller sunblinds and a 16-speaker harman/kardon surround sound system.

Technically, the Gran Coupe is classified as a 4+1-seater with the middle back seat reserved for short distances. There’s a 40/20/40 folding rear backrest and 440 litres of boot space, enough to accommodate three golf bags.

Until a fully-fledged M version arrives, the M850i xDrive Gran Coupe will act as the range-topper, priced from $272,900 plus on-road costs.

The flagship is powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 pumping out 390kW and 750Nm. An eight-speed automatic sends drive to all four wheels through the rear-biased xDrive all-wheel drive system. BMW says it can complete the 0-100km/h dash in 3.9 seconds

M850i variants also get M tuning on selected elements, adaptive M Suspension Professional with active roll stabilisation, 20-inch M light alloy wheels finished in Cerium Grey and wrapped with performance tyres, BMW ‘CraftedClarity’ glass decoration, larger 395mm M Sport brakes, BMW Night Vision with pedestrian recognition and tyre pressure monitoring.

The 8 Series Gran Coupe is available to order now with deliveries set to commence in the fourth quarter of this year.
