Specs and pricing have been confirmed for the 2020 Mazda 2 range which is on sale now priced from $20,990 plus on-roads.

The Japanese brand is continuing the trend of pushing its cars upmarket with the price of entry to the updated Mazda 2 range increasing by $5420.

Mazda will offer both hatchback and sedan body styles across three trim levels: G15 Pure, G15 Evolve and G15 GT.

Every variant is powered by a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine that develops 82kW and 144Nm (up from 79kW and 139Nm). Mazda claims the engine gets revised intake ports, piston rings and skirts, along with a new coolant control system to improve performance.

G15 Pure models are equipped with a six-speed manual as standard with the six-speed automatic available for an extra $2000. Evolve and GT variants get the auto as standard.

Interestingly, the Evolve model is only offered as a hatchback, sedan buyers need to stick with the base model Pure or the range-topping GT.

The Mazda 2 also gets the seating structure that better supports the natural S-curve of the spine (first seen on the new Mazda 3), and the G-Vectoring Control Plus (GVC Plus) technology to improve handling and vehicle stability.

Changes to the exterior design include a new mesh grille, restyled front and rear bumpers, and updated headlight and tail-lights.

On the inside, each grade gets unique fabrics and trims, while every model now includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard.

Safety gets a boost with lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and autonomous emergency braking (front and rear) with pedestrian detection included as standard across the range.

Evolve and GT models also add traffic sign recognition and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror.

The flagship GT also scores a 360-degree surround-view camera system and adaptive cruise control.

Over the next year, Mazda expects the Pure to account for 77 per cent of sales with 94 per cent of buyers opting for the automatic transmission.
