Mercedes-AMG has revealed the new GLE63 S and GLS63 S at the  Los Angeles motor show.

Both performance SUVs are powered by the familiar 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, which will feature the brand’s EQ Boost mild-hybrid technology for the first time. Outputs are listed at 450kW and 850Nm.

The EQ Boost starter-alternator can provide an additional 16kW and 250Nm for a faster take off. The mild-hybrid set-up also allows the car to coast at speed, along with providing smoother operation of the start/stop function.

For the first time, the EQ Boost starter-alternator is also responsible for idle speed control. This allows fuel savings that were previously reserved for high-voltage hybrid technology.

Power is sent to the variable 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system through an AMG calibrated nine-speed automatic transmission.

In terms of performance, the GLE63 S can run from 0-100km/h in 3.8 seconds, while the larger GLS63 S takes 4.2 seconds.

An electronic rear-axle locking differential, air suspension with special spring/damper set-up and adaptive adjustable damping are all standard.

The AMG pair are differentiated by the Panamericana grille, unique bonnet and bumpers, and 21-inch alloy wheels.

On the inside, buyers get AMG seats for the driver and front passenger, Nappa leather trim, the latest AMG steering wheel design, and the MBUX infotainment system with unique AMG displays.

Locally, the new GLE63 S and GLS63 S are expected to arrive in Australia from the middle of 2020.
