Volkswagen Australia has confirmed the Touareg V8 TDI R-Line will be available locally in the fourth quarter of 2020.

Power comes from a 4.0-litre twin-turbo diesel V8 that delivers 310kW and a whopping 900Nm. An eight-speed automatic transmission sends drive to all four wheels.

Performance-wise, Volkswagen claims the Touareg V8 TDI R-Line can sprint from 0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds – 0.1 behind the Australian-specification Golf R, while fuel consumption on the combined cycle is 7.4L/100km.

While final specs are yet to be confirmed, the brand says in R-Line trim the only options will be a panoramic glass sunroof and exterior colours.

While the price will be confirmed closer to release, Volkswagen Group Australia Managing Director Michael Bartsch said that the Touareg V8's sticker will reflect the value equation well established by new generation Touareg V6s.

"Even fully loaded, the Touareg V8 will undercut the starting price of its rivals to be the best value proposition in the premium large SUV segment," Mr Bartsch said.

"Luxury SUV performance of the Touareg V8's calibre won't be found elsewhere for less than $160,000. Nothing will approach the value of the Touareg's standard equipment for very much under $180,000 at the most competitive.”

The Touareg V8 won’t be widely available with the brand only committing to a limited production run to give buyers some level of exclusivity.

Full specifications and pricing will be announced closer to the Touareg V8 TDI R-Line’s local arrival in the fourth quarter of 2020.
