Australian specs and pricing have been confirmed for the updated 2021 BMW M5 Competition ahead of a local arrival in October.

Priced from $244,900 plus on-road costs, styling changes and a technology boost brings the M5 into line with the recently unveiled 5 Series range.

Externally, there’s a revised front end with a new front bumper, an updated kidney grille, a tweaked front apron with larger air intakes and new L-shaped light tubes.

At the rear, changes include thinner M-specific tailpipes, a new apron with a large diffuser and a fresh taillight signature.

On the inside, the headline act is the inclusion of the BMW OS7.0 infotainment system with two 12.3-inch displays (centre touchscreens and instrument binnacle).

The system includes the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, cloud-based satellite navigation, and both wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The set-up also benefits from the Remote Software Upgrade feature.

Buyers will find two new buttons on the centre console – like those found in the new M8 Competition – provide more direct access to system settings and the various readouts in the instrument cluster and head-up display.

Underneath, the revised suspension set-up integrates dampers from the M8 Competition Gran Coupe to improve the ride quality. There are also bespoke engine mounts with a stiffer spring rate which the brand says provides “greater directness and precision” when turning into corners.

Power continues to come from a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine producing 460kW and 750Nm. An eight-speed automatic sends drive to the switchable xDrive all-wheel drive system.

According to BMW, the M5 Competition can sprint from 0-100km/h in 3.3 seconds and hits 200km/h in 10.8 seconds. The top speed is 305km/h thanks to the standard M Driver’s Package.

The updated M5 Competition is available to order now with deliveries set to commence in October.
