The updated 6 Series Gran Turismo will not be available Down Under with BMW Australia confirming the niche model has been axed from the local range.

While interesting in isolation, the 6 Series GT never gained much traction locally. It started as the 5 Series GT before swapping digits in 2018.

The model attempted to blend the higher seating position of an SUV, the legroom of a wagon and the practicality of a hatchback, but it never hit the right note with buyers.

In the era of the SUV, according to VFACTS data only 54 units were sold in 2019. For context, BMW sold almost 1000 5 Series models in 2019 and almost 3500 examples of the popular X5.

BMW Australia CEO Vikram Pawah said: “We are continuing our biggest model offensive in history with the launch of new and exciting products.”

“The BMW 6 Series GT has always been a niche product for us in Australia and we will continue to cater to specific customers by bringing products that suit their individual requirements.”

The updated 6 Series GT was only revealed yesterday alongside the refreshed 5 Series. The update included a tweaked front end, the brand’s latest OS7.0 infotainment system and more safety tech.
