Toyota Australia has confirmed the new Kluger will be offered locally with a hybrid powertrain for the first time.

Keen buyers will need to be patient, the new fourth-generation of the seven-seat Kluger is set to arrive in Oz during the first half of next year.

The move to offer the Kluger Hybrid follows in the tyre treads of the new RAV4 and C-HR, along with the upcoming Yaris Cross in Toyota's hybrid SUV portfolio.

In the current market, hybrid models are doing well, Toyota says hybrid vehicles now account for more than one in every five cars it sells.

The new Kluger hybrid will comprise a 2.5-litre petrol engine, a pair of electric motors and a hybrid battery to be located under the second-row seats to produce 179kW of power.

A 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine offering 218kW of power mated with an eight-speed automatic will also be available.

Front and all-wheel drive systems will be available for the Kluger range, with the hybrid system exclusively matched with an all-wheel drive.

The new Kluger will be built on the Toyota New Global Architecture GA-K platform and feature the brand’s latest suite of active safety technologies.

Expect Toyota Australia to release more details in the lead up to the Kluger Hybrid’s launch in the first half of 2021.
