Toyota has announced a racing version of the upcoming Supra will compete in the 2020 Super GT Championship in Japan.

Based on the Supra Racing Concept, the new race car highlights the development of Toyota's high-performance vehicles.

This announcement barely precedes the official reveal of the final production version of the new Supra at the Detroit motor show.

Debuting at the Tokyo Auto Salon, the GT-spec Supra concept demonstrates how Toyota is developing the production Supra to be a genuine driver's car.

Toyota’s involvement in motorsport through Gazoo Racing, the international umbrella organisation for Toyota's global sporting program and producer of performance-focused GR-branded cars, has been fed back into the production of new vehicles.

Over the years the Supra has built its reputation as a performer on road and track, dominating the Japanese GT racing series and earning legions of fans. It secured the championship on four occasions.

The latest concept’s circuit-racing design uses state-of-the-art composite materials to ensure both rigidity and lightness as well as featuring a front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout.

Other highlights include the wide front and rear bumpers, front splitter and rear diffuser, side skirts and a large rear wing.
