The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries has reported a record November of 101,365 sales has seen the Australian new car market again eclipse the 1 million mark with a month remaining.

With the new car sales tally now at 1,086,296, the market is sitting 0.6 per cent ahead of last year’s record. A new yearly record is certain to be set in 2017.

SUVs now hold 40.2 per cent of the market and are starting to widen the lead over passenger cars which have a 36.4 per cent market share.

In many ways, the market returned a business as usual result with Toyota continuing to dominate.

Hyundai’s successful October with the i30 couldn’t be repeated, the small hatch was relegated to sixth spot. The addition of the cheaper i30 Go will give Hyundai the scope to advertise the range at a lower price.

The Toyota HiLux regained its position on top of the podium, with the Ranger at number two. The enthusiasm the market has for utes show no signs of easing.

Holden sold 229 more cars than it did in October, a disappointing result in light of the 7-year warranty promotion.

Honda had more success with an extended warranty promotion and was able to crack the top ten. A longer warranty has assisted Skoda to pass the 5000 mark for the first time.

Subaru has achieved sales of 48,379 year-to-date (YTD) meaning the brand has broken its annual record.

At the premium end of the market, Lexus is on track to move more than 8,500 cars, a record for the Japanese brand. The NX, RX and LX SUV lines have led the way with a 5.9 per cent improvement over November last year.

Alfa Romeo recorded 116 sales which is a huge 251.5 per cent gain on the corresponding month in 2016. Regardless of the significant percentage gain, it’s a disappointing result. The new Giulia has been the beneficiary of plenty of media hype that hasn’t resonated with buyers.
