Firstly there will be a horde of special-edition models available including the Edition Sport Line Shadow, Edition M Sport Shadow and BMW M140i Edition Shadow. These special-edition versions will be differentiated with a black kidney grille, LED headlights with black inserts and darkened rear LED lights. The BMW 1 Series Edition M Sport Shadow also exhibits black exhaust tailpipes from the rear.

In addition to the standard model, Sport Line, Urban Line and M Sport variants of the BMW 1 Series are retained.

Five new light-alloy wheels are added to the 17 and 18-inch designs to provide a total of 16 different wheel options across the range for even more personalisation opportunity.

As in the updated 2 Series, the 1 Series has a redesigned instrument panel with a focus on the driver and the option of an 8.8-inch touchscreen with the Navigation system Professional. The interior also receives other minor facelift changes. The latest iDrive operating system is also standard across the BMW 1 Series range.

In terms of engines, there is a choice between petrol and diesel across the three, four and six-cylinder variants. In the petrol line-up, the turbocharged three-cylinder unit starts off the range and produces 80kW in the 116i. The in-line six-cylinder engine in the M140i outputs 250kW.

The diesel models, now featuring new turbocharger technology, offer 85kW of power at the entry point of the offerings in the BMW 116d, rising to 165kW in the 125d.

All engines feature the BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and are matched to an eight-speed Steptronic, eight-speed Steptronic Sport or six-speed manual gearbox depending on the grade.

The 3-door and 5-door versions will be launched in July 2017.
