Honda has given fans a first look of the updated 2020 Civic Type R performance hatch at the Tokyo Auto Salon.

For 2020, the Civic Type R gets subtle revisions to the exterior including a larger grille and body-coloured blades above the fog lights at the front, while the rear gets the same detail across the fake air vents.

Buyers will also have the option of a new exclusive Boost Blue exterior paint.

Underneath, the dampers have been retuned for better comfort, friction has been reduced in the front suspension to improve the steering feel, the rear bushings are stiffer for greater handling, while new two-piece discs will bring the Type R to a stop.

On the inside, there’s an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel and a new gear knob. Honda also says the shifter has been tweaked for shorter throws.

It’s expected that all examples heading to Oz will get the full Honda Sensing suite of driver aids as standard. This includes autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring.

Power will continue to come from the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine which produces 228kW and 400Nm. Drive is sent to the front wheels via a six-speed manual and a limited-slip differential.

Australian specs and pricing are yet to be confirmed. Stay tuned!
