Kia Australia has confirmed local specs and pricing for the seven-seat Sorento plug-in hybrid SUV.

Available in GT-Line AWD specification, the Sorento PHEV will launch at an eye-watering $81,990 drive-away. For context, the PHEV asks an additional $15,000 over the AWD diesel equivalent.

When compared to the aforementioned diesel GT-Line, the PHEV is differentiated by a hybrid power meter, smaller 19-inch alloy wheels, a HEV/EV mode button, and additional functionality for the climate control system to only activate in the driver’s zone to increase economy.

Keen buyers should also note the PHEV misses out on Remote Smart Park Assist which is standard on the regular GT-Line models.

The Sorento’s hybrid powertrain consists of a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine, an electric motor, lithium-ion battery pack, six-speed automatic transmission and on-demand all-wheel drive.

In terms of outputs, the petrol engine produces 132kW and 265Nm, while the electric motor generates 67kW and 304Nm. In total, the system develops 195kW and 350Nm.

When the 14kWh lithium-ion polymer battery pack is fully charged, a pure electric driving range of up to 68km is possible.

Kia says the battery can be charged from 15 to 95 per cent in 3 hours and 25 minutes when using AC single-phase charging through its Type 2 port.

The Sorento PHEV has a maximum braked towing capacity of 1350kg with a downball load of 100kg.
