Hyundai has revealed its new compact SUV, the Kona.

Named after a coastal region on the Big Island of Hawaii, the Kona will join the Tucson and Santa Fe in Hyundai’s SUV portfolio.

Built on an all-new sub-compact SUV platform, the proportions of the Kona are comparable to models like the Mazda CX-3. The Kona measures 4165mm long, 1800mm wide and 1550mm tall. The Kona’s wheelbase hits a respectable, but not class leading 2600mm.

For Australia, Hyundai will offer the Kona in three trim levels. The range will kick off with a 2.0-litre MPI engine that sends power to the front wheels through a six-speed automatic gearbox.

Moving up to the mid and high-spec variants, power is provided by a 1.6T-GDI turbocharged engine, matched to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (7DCT) and all-wheel drive.

Hyundai will also bring a comprehensive package of safety features, with Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), available across the range.

Local pricing is yet to be announced, however, Hyundai claim it will be competitive when compared to Japanese rivals such as Mazda CX-3, Toyota CH-R, Honda HR-V and Mitsubishi ASX.

The Kona will go on sale in Australia from late September or early October 2017.

Stay tuned for final specification and pricing information.
