Mercedes-Benz Australia has announced the A250e plug-in hybrid (PHEV) hatch and sedan have arrived in local showrooms priced from $63,400 plus on-road costs.
The plug-in hybrid powertrain uses the 1.3-litre four-cylinder petrol engine from the A180 combined with an electric motor and 15.6kWh battery pack to produce 160kW and 450Nm.
An eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission sends power to the front wheels.
According to WLTP testing, when the battery is fully charged the A250e has an electric range of 73km, and sips 1.6L/100km on the combined cycle.
A250e models are equipped with a Type 2 plug for charging which is capable of a rate of up to 3.7kW. An optional Mercedes-Benz Wallbox Home ($1250) can deliver 7.4kW or 22kW on three-phase power.
A DC Charging Package ($1490) will also be available offering 24kW which can replenish the battery from 10 to 80 per cent in 25 minutes.
Performance-wise, the A250e takes 6.6 seconds to hit 100km/h from a standstill in the hatch variant, and 6.7 seconds in the sedan. In EV mode the top speed is 140km/h climbing to 235km/h when the engine kicks in.
Both the hatch and sedan feature LED headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, the twin-screen MBUX infotainment system with navigation, Artico upholstery and wireless smartphone charging.
The A250e also gets pre-entry climate control thanks to an electric refrigerant compressor, which can be controlled via the Mercedes me Connect suite of services from a smartphone app.
Standard safety kit includes autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot assist, active lane keep assist, traffic sign assist, nine airbags and adaptive high beam assist.
