Specifications and pricing have been announced for the 2018 BMW M2 range.

The updated model will be available in showrooms around the country from September this year. Only recently BMW announced a larger allocation of M2s, that were available for immediate delivery. This move could now be interpreted as a stock clearing exercise to make room for the incoming model.

Updates for the 2018 M2 begin with the new lighting signature seeing the bi-xenon headlights replaced with new adaptive LEDs and a redesign for the daytime running lights. In the BMW M2 Pure version, Bi-LED headlights are a standard feature.

Moving to the rear sees single piece full-LED L-shaped tail lights now used.

As in other series updates, such as the 1 Series and 2 Series, the iDrive6 infotainment system will be included, in this case as standard for both the M2 Coupe and Pure Coupe.

This brings a customisable 8.8-inch touchscreen featuring a live-content tiled interface. Natural voice recognition can be used to interact with the system as can the iDrive rotary controller and touch pad.

M-specific content is also a feature of the new instrument display.

Leather covered sports seats and leather BMW M steering wheel complement each other nicely but unfortunately, the dreaded high-gloss black surface has made its way into the centre console.

Fortunately, BMW has responded to customer feedback and have introduced the ‘snap’ into locked position for the wiper and indicator stalks.

The drive train remains the same for the 2018 model year. The BMW M2 packs a 3.0-litre single-turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine under the hood. It develops 272kW/465Nm or 500Nm with the inbuilt overboost function to propel the car from a standstill to 100km/h in 4.3 seconds when paired with the standard M DCT seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, or 4.5 seconds with the no-cost optional six-speed manual transmission.

Buyers looking for an M2 should haggle hard on the current model, the 2018 update will be more expensive, the M2 Pure is up $3090, while the M2 will cost $790 more.
