SsangYong Australia has released initial details for the upcoming Rexton, the large seven-seat SUV will be looking to take sales from the Isuzu MU-X, Ford Everest and Toyota Fortuner when it launches locally in November.

The entry-level Rexton will be offered with a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 165kW of power and torque of 350Nm. Opting for petrol power means the Rexton is a 2WD proposition with a six-speed automatic transmission.

In keeping with the segment’s norms, there will also be a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine developing 133kW and 420Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via a seven-speed automatic transmission from Mercedes-Benz.

In Australia, large petrol SUVs are not as popular as diesel-powered models, so expect the oiler to account for the majority of Rexton sales.

Like the majority of its rivals, the Rexton utilises a body-on-frame construction. The tale of the tape sees the Rexton come in at 4850mm long, 1960mm wide, 1825mm high with a 2865mm wheelbase.

Diesel models will feature a selectable 4x4 system with low ratio gears which will be helpful if the Rexton is ever piloted off-road.

It looks the part, the days of SsangYong’s controversial designs are gone. The front grille is said to resemble the spread wings of a bird in flight. Hmmm.

The interior sticks to a contemporary layout with a few luxury touches and the choice of high-grade nappa leather trim.

At launch, all Rexton variants will come standard with seven seats, the second row of seats splitting 60:40 with a folding centre armrest, and giving easy access to the third row of seats, which fold 50:50.

The cabin will also get an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with DAB radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Rexton will be equipped with a comprehensive safety package. Autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, high-beam assist and seven airbags are all standard. Higher trim levels will also get a 360-degree camera system and rear cross-traffic alert.

Australian pricing is yet to be confirmed, more information is expected in the lead up to the Rexton’s local launch in November.
